Thinking about Tel Aviv, one might say what an old city! Hard to explain why so many people have this believe, because in fact the city of Tel Aviv is very young, one of the youngest worldwide, and has just celebrated 100 years from its grounding.

Maybe the name Tel Aviv sounds so old or obsolete, but it simply means ” Hill of Spring”, as translated from Hebrew. The city itself is also simply charming, and people all around the world call it “The city that never stops”. Tel Aviv lives, Jerusalem prays and Haifa works, say the people in Israel. Tel Aviv is far away from being traditionalist. On the contrary, is one of the most liberal cities around the world.

Tel Aviv is preparing to jump to the status of metropolis. It is not very big (400 000 inhabitants, and 1 million in the urban area around), but very dynamic. Usually, the people are not born, and don’t die in Tel Aviv. It is a party city, comparable with New York, if you allow me to make this comparation. It is not seldom when at 4 a.m. the beaches are full of people (but only on official free days. Even the Luna parks and amusements are only open on free days, and overcrowded on this occasions).

Tel Aviv is also called The White City, and the explanation is simple: during the 30’s decade German hebrew fleding from Hitler brought in Tel Aviv the architecture current called Bauhaus. There are thousands of buildings in the Bauhaus style, and even a Bauhaus museum. All these buildings are white, and give Tel Aviv a special flair.

Again contrary on you might think, Tel Aviv and Israel are some safe places to visit. The crime rate is much lower than in other comparable cities, and the most serious threaten to your safety are the possible terror attacks. That’s why you should observe, notice and report the behavior of the other people; you should cary all the time your passport or other identification papers. The policeman are very friendly and speak usually understandable English. Avoid walking alone at night in the southern neighborhood, excepting Florentin.

Everything is amazing in Tel Aviv: the people, the city, the food. You can eat on the streets delicious hummus and falafel, or you can go in one of the many bars ( I would suggest Rosa in Dizengoff) for tasting the special coffees being the favorite delight of the local bohemians. Further you can eat local and international dishes in a good restaurant ( try Cordelia in the old city of Jaffa).

If you wanna discover the rest of Israel going from Tel Aviv, you can use cars and buses, as the highway network is excellent. A special mention for traveling from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem: use the train, it is fantastic and you’ll never regret it ( but it lasts double as by car!)

As an international traveler you are going to feel all right in Tel Aviv, which is a cosmopolitan  international city.
